companies and users

webphlex includes a simple security system based on companies and users.

As many separate companies and users as required can be defined. Each user belongs to one particular company, and logs on with his own password.

Data normally belongs to a particular company, and is only available to users from that company. However, data can also be shared by giving it company code "*ALL", so that it can be read and used by users from all companies. It can, however, only be changed by user "MANAGER".

The predefined user "MANAGER" is company-independent and can access and change all data. Only user "MANAGER" can create and delete companies and users, change data which is shared between all companies, and carry out certain critical activities such as loading or cleaning up the database.

A normal user can read and change most data for his own company, but some company-critical data and actions are reserved for users defined as a 'company manager'.

A user can be given the status 'read-only'; he can then read all data belonging to his company (or to company "*ALL"), but can change nothing.

A user can also be given the status 'translator' for a given language; he can then read all data belonging to his company (or to company "*ALL"), but can change nothing except for the content of text blocks in the language specified.

When installed, the system contains only user "MANAGER" (company "*ALL"), with password "MANAGER".

record numbers and codes

All data in the system is identified by a numeric key and an alphanumeric code.

The numeric key is automatically assigned when a record is created and can never be changed. It is unique throughout the whole system.

The alphanumeric code is assigned by the user and can be changed at any time. It is unique within a particular company, but the same code can be in use in several records belonging to different companies. Data belonging to company "*ALL" must have a code which is unique throughout the system.
