location of preview / symbol files

A default location for preview / symbol files can be specified in the field 'default location for preview / symbol files' of the page group screen. However, the actual location for a given element's preview / symbol file can be different.

It is not necessary for the preview / symbol file to be specifically named when it is stored in the default location for preview / symbol files, and either

  • its name is identical to that of the corresponding main file, or
  • its name is identical to that of the corresponding main file, extended with the prefix and/or suffix for preview / symbol files; in this case the default locations for main files and preview / symbol files can be identical.
The preview / symbol file name is then generated on the basis of the corresponding main file name.
  • In the 'Lanzarote' example image galleries (here), for example, the main image files are stored in directory ../images and the preview images in directory ../previews, both relative to the main page group location. Their file names are identical.
  • In the example image gallery Dublin, 1990-92 the main image files are stored in directory images and the preview images in directory previews, both relative to the main page group location. Their file names are identical, except that a suffix x is added to the main file name to produce that of the preview. In this case both the previews and main images could have been stored in the same directory.

location of bitmap files

As well as the main images and previews, it is also possible to store bitmap versions, with names identical to those of the corresponding main files, in the location specified in the field 'default location for bitmap image files' of the page group screen. These bitmaps can then be used to quickly display the images in the internal viewer, which can only handle bitmaps. If no bitmap versions are present (and the main c.q. symbol / preview files are not themselves bitmaps), the external image viewer will be used.
