If you don't have MS Access (2000 or higher) installed on your machine, you can still run webphlex if you first install a runtime version of MS Access. This is basically a version of MS Access which can execute software written in Visual Basic for an Access database, but with which it is not possible to develop software or change the structure of a database.

WARNING: If you are already using an older version of MS Access (e.g. Access 97), then it's probably a good idea to uninstall this before installing a later runtime version. As far as we are aware, it is not possible to use two versions of MS Access simultaneously on the same computer.

Two installation files are provided, for the runtime versions of MS Access 2000 and 2002. We recommend using Access 2002 runtime, but if you experience difficulties with it, try using the Access 2000 version instead. The older version is less likely to experience installation problems, and webphlex seems to run just as well under Access 2000 as under the later version.

You can download these files from the iphlex downloads page, but they are also included in the webphlex installation CD. See below for installation details.

installing Access 2002 runtime

In Windows explorer, navigate to the file art2002.exe and double-click on it to start the installation program.

Leave the box "When done unzipping open: accessrt.msi" ticked, and click on "Unzip" to start the process.

When you get the message "3 file(s) unzipped successfully", click "OK". Microsoft Access 2002 Runtime Setup will start. Click "Install" to start the process.

Note that file art2002.exe is a self-extracting executable which calls the Windows Installer. If you get a message indicating that the file type .msi is not recognied by Windows, you may need to install a newer version of the the Windows Installer. For information about obtaining the latest version, see "How to obtain and download the latest version of Windows Installer", but the version which can be downloaded here, and is included in the webphlex installation CD (up to date as of 11-03-2006) should be sufficient.

You may need to re-start Windows before running webphlex.

installing MS Access runtime under Windows NT 4.0

When installing MS Access runtime under Windows NT 4.0, you may get error messages such as

  • "Error 1904. Setup cannot register module C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\1033\MSRCLR40.DLL. If you click Cancel or Ignore, run Setup again and reinstall or repair your Office installation"
or
  • "Error 1904. Setup cannot register module C:\WINNT\System32\MSXML3.DLL. If you click Cancel or Ignore, run Setup again and reinstall or repair your Office installation".
You can safely click "Ignore", and the installation should continue successfully.
