webphlex installation instructions, 16-03-2006
IMPORTANT: Please read this file carefully before installing webphlex.
N.B. You have to have Microsoft Access (2000 or higher) installed on your system before you can use webphlex.
For more information on how webphlex is implemented and how to install a new version, see http://www.iphlex.com/install.html

---------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Unpack the zip file
N.B. webphlex is normally provided as a compressed (.zip) file. If you received webphlex in an uncompressed form (e.g. on a CD), you can skip this part.
Under Windows XP you can unpack the zip file directly. Just find the file in Windows Explorer, then double-click on it, or right-click on it and choose the option for extracting all data from the file.
In other systems you may need to use decompression software, such as WinZip. If you already have decompression software installed on your system, you can probably unpack the zip file by double-clicking on it in Windows Explorer, or by right-clicking on it and choosing the option for extracting all data from the file. If this doesn't work, start your decompression software, navigate to the webphlex zip file and extract its contents. For information on WinZip, see http://www.winzip.com/
In either case, you should extract the contents to a temporary location on disk, preserving any directory structure stored in the zip file (e.g. documentation and example web sites will normally be placed in sub-directories - they should remain in the same sub-directories in your temporary location)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
2 Create a webphlex directory.
N.B. If you are already using webphlex, and are just installing a new version, you can skip this part.
Using Windows Explorer, create a new directory for webphlex. This can be anywhere, but the simplest is to create directory C:\webphlex\. The first time you run the system, it will expect to find the local documentation files in directory C:\webphlex\webphlex_doc, but you can adjust the location later if necessary.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
3 Copy or move the webphlex files to the webphlex directory.
IMPORTANT: A webphlex database consists of just one file, containing both the software and your data. If you are already using webphlex, you are putting a new version into the same directory as the old one, and you didn't rename your database after installation, don't forget to rename it now! IF YOU OVERWRITE THE OLD VERSION OF YOUR DATABASE AND DON'T HAVE A BACKUP, YOU WILL IRRETRIEVEABLY LOSE ALL YOUR DATA! It is in any case good practice to make a backup copy of any system before installing a new version.
You should preferably rename the new webphlex database (supplied as webphlex.mde) immediately, to avoid any danger of overwriting it when you install a new version later.
If you received webphlex on a CD, check whether the database files webphlex.mde and ipdmaint.mde are read-only (this is usually the case when a file has been copied from CD) and make sure that they can be overwritten. You can do this by right-clicking on the file in Windows Explorer, choosing option "Properties" and making sure that the "Read-only" attribute is set off.
For more information on how webphlex is implemented and how to install a new version, see http://www.iphlex.com/install.html.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
4 Install Microsoft Access runtime.
N.B. If you already have Microsoft Access (2000 or higher) installed on your system, you can skip this part.
N.B. These instructions refer to Microsoft Access runtime 2002, the recommended runtime environment for webphlex. For information on how to install Microsoft Access runtime 2000, or for more information about Microsoft Access runtime, see section "implementation & installation details" of the documentation (http://www.iphlex.com/install.html).
WARNING: If you are already using an older version of MS Access (e.g. Access 97), then it's probably a good idea to uninstall this before installing a later runtime version. As far as we are aware, it is not possible to use two versions of MS Access simultaneously on the same computer.
In Windows explorer, navigate to the file art2002.exe and double-click on it to start the installation program. Leave the box "When done unzipping open: accessrt.msi" ticked, and click on "Unzip" to start the process.
When you get the message "3 file(s) unzipped successfully", click "OK". Microsoft Access 2002 Runtime Setup will start. Click "Install" to start the process.
Note that file art2002.exe is a self-extracting executable which calls the Windows Installer. If you get a message indicating that the file type .msi is not recognied by Windows, you may need to install a newer version of the Windows Installer. For more information see the section "implementation & installation details" of the documentation (http://www.iphlex.com/install.html).
Re-start Windows before proceding further with the installation.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
5 Start webphlex.
N.B. You have to have Microsoft Access (2000 or higher) installed on your system before you can use webphlex.
You will probably now be able to start webphlex by double-clicking on the webphlex database (supplied as webphlex.mde) in Windows Explorer.
If this doesn't work, start Microsoft Access, choose option Open in the File menu, navigate to the webphlex database and open it.
Follow the instructions given, until you are presented with the webphlex log-on screen.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
6 Log on to webphlex.
When you start webphlex for the first time, you will have to log on as user MANAGER, using password "manager". You will then be presented with the control panel, from where you can get help by clicking the help button or right-clicking on the screen and choosing the help option. If you load this database later from an existing one, you will then be able to log on to it with your old user name and password.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
7 Loading webphlex from another version.
If you are already using webphlex and are installing a new version, you can now load your data from the old version into the new one. From the control panel, go to page 'System Maintenance' and choose the option 'empty database / load this database from another database'. See the help system for more details.
